Conclusions for Critical Essays – Dulce et Decorum est example

Conclusion

Step One – Make clear you are concluding by using these words in your conclusion:

  • in conclusion
  • for these reasons
  • as a result of
  • in effect
  • altogether
  • indeed
  • surely
  • clearly
  • to sum up
  • overall
  • truly
  • all in all
  • due to
  • obviously
  • definitely
  • ultimately
  • thus
  • in effect
  • consequently

Step two – Give a summary of what you have shown (evidence and analysis) and how this answers the question. Eg.

In conclusion, and through close analysis of the literary techniques used by Owen, it has been proven that his poem, ‘Dulce et Decorum est’, due to its vivid and graphic imagery, leaves a lasting, somewhat scarring, impression on the reader.

Step three – Sign off on a personal note once again by repeating a summary of what you said in your responses.

Ultimately I myself know that I will never forget his grim and terrible account of the First World War since his poetry has so explicitly brought it to life for me.
